Entrepreneurship at the University of Houston

One of the best things about attending college is how it opens up many unique opportunities for students to explore ways that their skills, interests and personal hobbies can be utilized in their professional lives. As a college student myself, navigating your way through figuring out what career path you choose to follow is one of the best parts of the college experience and one that can be universally applied to any field of study including entrepreneurship.

If your child is interested in continuing to learn more about starting a business, there are numerous differences for them to do so at the university level right here in Texas. The C.T. Bauer College of Business at the University of Houston is one example with a total of 7 options for B.S.As to choose from as well as 11 options for minors. In addition to having a concentration dedicated for entrepreneurship, there are also ones for other techniques and skills including:

Both the undergraduate and graduate business programs have received national attention for their quality and how they’ve greatly benefited their alumni long after their academic journey. According to the most recent U.S. News and World report, the entrepreneurship program was ranked 9th in the world overall among entrepreneurship programs as well as being tied for 27th in the area of entrepreneurship in 2023.

College is more than just the classes though. It’s also a great chance to help build a strong sense of community amongst individuals. The city of Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the United States and these academic programs reflect equal opportunities at success in the industry for minority students. Over 38% of current undergraduate business students are Black and Hispanic and the institution was ranked first in the state of Texas for degrees awarded to minority students.

In addition to this, the university also has clubs and student organizations for business majors that come from similar social and cultural backgrounds to connect with each other such as the Black Business Student Association and Business Women Society. Organizations like these highlight a clear incentive to promote diversity and a sense of belonging in this field of study.

Interim Dean Praneev Kumar had the following to say about the college:

“While it is true that Bauer College transforms the lives of students, it is even more accurate to say that our students transform the college with their ideas, enthusiasm and passion.”

Entrepreneurship is something that isn’t limited to any one person or group of people. The core ideas behind learning how to build resilience and leadership skills through economics is something that can be internalized and achieved by anyone regardless of who they are or where they come from. And because the University of Houston business program reflects that idea, I feel that it is an amazing option for students who want to continue their entrepreneurial endeavors.
